Social Theory

Social Theory
is the foundational framework in sociology that provides a set of ideas and concepts to understand, explain, and analyze social phenomena, behavior, and structures. It helps sociologists interpret the workings of society, the relationships between individuals and groups, and the changes over time. Key elements of social theory include:
  1. Classical Theories:
    • Karl Marx: Focused on class conflict, capitalism, and how economic structures shape society.
    • Émile Durkheim: Studied social cohesion, the role of institutions, and the concept of "social facts."
    • Max Weber: Emphasized the importance of individual actions, bureaucracy, and the influence of culture and religion on society.
  2. Contemporary Theories:
    • Structural Functionalism: Views society as a system of interdependent parts working together to maintain stability.
    • Conflict Theory: Focuses on power struggles and inequality, often influenced by Marxist ideas.
    • Symbolic Interactionism: Examines how individuals create and interpret meanings through social interaction.
    • Feminist Theory: Explores gender inequalities and the role of patriarchy in society.
    • Postmodernism: Challenges universal truths and emphasizes diversity, subjectivity, and fragmented realities.
Social theory provides a lens for sociologists to critically evaluate society, investigate social issues, and propose solutions to social problems. It continues to evolve as society changes and new perspectives emerge.
